04/03/2015: I spotted three modern headstones in this churchyard, all featuring text on the back too. It is nice to see modern, hand-cut memorials instead of the usual, nasty sand-blasted granite horrors. It may be no more expensive to have hand cut lettering on a lovely piece of British stone than to have another imported Chinese granite slab, bought off the shelf.
Have a look at the web site of Memorials by Artists.
Unusual name: Jabez Tunstall. I wonder if his mother named him after reading in the bible (1 Chronicles 4: v9),"and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow."
In the bible, Job had a lot to put up with yet he kept his faith. It is common to see a line from Job 19: 25 (in part or in full) where he says, "I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth." This and the next verse appear in Handel's Messiah, but in verse 26 there's an added expression which Handel omitted:
25. For I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth.
26. And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God.
Sarah Jackson died 45 years after The Messiah was written - by which time it was well known and very popular. Her headstone though uses the biblical text, not the slightly less grisly version used by Handel.
