St Matthew, Pentrich, Derbyshire

07/08/2015: Eric Gill, type designer, sculptor and letter carver, had a reprehensible private life, but he knew a thing or two about letter forms. He said that "letters are things, not pictures of things", and in that vein I find the 3D lettering on the headstone for Elizabeth Turton, who died in 1844, to be a crime against lettering. Truly horrible.

I spotted a pair of lovely small stones, most likely to be footstones rather than just simple headstones, for TG, dated 1685 and IG (or JG) dated 1712 with beautiful raised lettering.

The font stands on a pedestal dated 1662 but the bowl has decoration typical of the Norman period. Apparently.
